AUDITION INFORMATION

**PLEASE MEMORIZE or be very familiar with the first scene for your character for your initial audition.**Each character link has the initial audition sides for each character and the callback sides included as one packet. I may see only one scene at the initial audition.

I am INCREDIBLY excited to bring this brilliant, and funny, and harrowing and fascinatingly dark Southern gothic play into the world for the first time with Revolution Stage Company.  Emma Schillage has created something beautiful for us to all make together.  Emma will be joining us later in the rehearsal process as well!  This is going to be a fun adventure to figure out the unique journey of this piece, and we’re looking for open, creative actors to bring it to life!

THE STORY

Cockroaches is a Southern Gothic dark comedy about three sisters trapped in their childhood home grappling with their mother's most recent suicide attempt. Momma has been acting strange since coming home from the hospital, causing eldest daughter, Jenny, to come home from college, middle child, Charlie, to act out, and youngest child, Sissy, to follow in her mother's footsteps. Meanwhile, monsters are lurking, ready to consume every bit of innocence in their path. As their mother's humanity fades, the sisters must learn to care for themselves and each other before it is too late.

Emma Schillage (they/them) is a queer Southern Gothic playwright, actor, director, and theatre educator based in New York and New Orleans. Emma won the Del Shores Foundation Writers Festival Best Play for Cockroaches, and this will be the world premiere production.  Emma will be involved throughout the process of creating the show!

 

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

JENNIFER “JENNY” - 18-26 to play 18; the eldest child; the caretaker; she is responsible and intelligent, but she isn’t sure what her purpose is outside of taking care of her family.

CHARLOTTE “CHARLIE” - 18-25 to play 15; sturdy, the middle child, the pot-stirrer, she is intuitive, yet deeply insecure; her love and intensity can quickly turn into violence (it’s a defense mechanism.)

SAVINA “SISSY” - 18-25 to play 12; small, thin, the youngest; the crybaby/peace-keeper; she is sensitive and joyful but somewhat disturbed; she feels everything with heightened intensity.

MR. SAM (M) – 35-48; the next-door neighbor

MOMMA (F) - 35-45; the human parts of her are fading (see note below.)

 

NOTES ON CASTING

**All three sisters must be 18+ to play younger.​

**NOTES ON MOMMA**

This character has no actual lines besides moans and screams in the play. She is almost a specter haunting the girls, a force impacting the play. The journey of this character will be crafted together through the rehearsal process. This is for a strong mover and creative performer excited by the unknown of what this character will finally be. There are a few specific moments where she is scripted onstage, we may explore other opportunities to have her lurking throughout the play – the playwright has allowed and encouraged this possibility.  Her appearance in the play is exciting and shocking when it occurs.  **For the audition for Momma, please bring your favorite 1-2 minute comedic and1-2 minute dramatic monologue, or one you feel serves both.
